Great hiking country - mountains, volcanoes, grassland plateaux and rich birdlife

Tanzania

Southern Highlands

Away from the major tour hot spots, freedom to hike is rewarded with dramatic scenery in a region rich with biodiversity. Scenic highlights include Ngosi Crater Lake and Kitulo Plateau.

Rift Valley folding and later volcanic activity have resulted in some of the oldest and newest rock formations in Africa. Evident lava flows are capped by the two highest peaks of southern Tanzania - Mtorwi and Mount Rungwe.

The Southern Highlands boast around 25% of the total floral species of East Africa. There are some 120 plant and animal species unique to the area. The mountain grasslands of the plateaux are particularly rich in orchid species.

Richness of amphibians, reptiles and birds compensates for the absence of larger mammals in the area. There are six designated important bird areas.
