Soda lakes, parks and large flocks of flamingoes
A group of soda lakes - Lake Natron, Lake Manyara, Lake Eyasi and Lake Makati - continues the eastern branch of the Rift Valley south from Kenya on its course through to Malawi.
The alkalinity of the waters provides the perfect environment for the growth of abundant algae to attract large seasonal flocks of flamingoes.
To the west of Lake Manyara, the escarpment wall rises sharply to lead the road up into Ngorongoro Conservation Area and beyond to the Serengeti Plains. The east of the Rift Valley is notable for the absence of any boundary escarpment.
