Home of the chimpanzees famously studied by Jane Goodall on the shore of Lake Tanganyika
The small Gombe reserve on Lake Tanganyika came to worldwide attention as the location of Jane Goodall's pioneering research into its resident chimpanzee population.
The narrow reserve runs along the escarpment of the lake shore, cut in deep valleys by multiple streams as it goes. Chimp tracking can take anything from an hour to much longer in wet season when the chimpanzees forage at higher locations.
The remote location and park fees have combined to ensure that the park has escaped the crowds.
