Hot, dusty and humid, old Zambesi crossing, fading old town
Tete is best known as a link between Malawi and Zimbabwe and through to southern Mozambique. The city is dusty, hot and humid, surrounded by featureless, scrubby plains. Its importance lies in the Zambesi suspension bridge at the crossing used since 14th century by Arab traders. It was also an early trading port.
The chief attraction of the area is the highland area around Cahora Bassa Dam which provides excellent sport fishing in fine highland scenery.
Road connections are good, with a worthy selection of restaurants in the city. The old town has some interest in its fading buildings going back to 16th century. The re-built Portuguese fort on the river dates back to 1576. Another fort in the southern area was used to trade slaves.
