Mozambique's quarter of Lake Malawi, remote and wild, good beaches, fishing and snorkel

Mozambique

Lake Niassa

Lake Niassa makes up one quarter of Lake Malawi, remote from the rest of the Mozambique and left as largely unspoilt wooded areas. Good beaches and wilderness location make an interesting destination for a relaxed getaway. The west-facing location provides excellent sunset views.

Activities include walking trails, fishing, windsurfing, snorkelling and kayaking. Rich fish life offers colourful aquarium species in clear waters. Larger species for anglers include lake tiger and lake salmon, known for their resistance.

The only towns are at Cobue, Metangula and Meponda, accessed by difficult roads or Ilala Ferry. For adventurous hikers, there are walking routes between the towns. Fishing provides the main source of protein and an income from sales of dried fish.
