Collapsed volcano, fine scenery, rich in gemstones, high biodiversity, hiking and birding

Namibia

Erongo Mountains

The Erongo Mountains see the meeting of highland, bush and desert in a scenic wilderness. The area has high biodiversity, rich birdlife and a number of unique species amongst its vegetation and wildlife.

The nature conservancy consists of a group of 30 privately owned areas jointly managed to allow access to fine hiking country and a rich cultural heritage in the widespread rock art and engravings including Paula’s Cave.

Important birds include rosyfaced lovebird, Damara rockrunner and Ruppell's parrot, along with breeding black eagle, booted eagle and Peregrine falcon. Diverse wildlife includes Hartmann's zebra, black mongoose and Angola dwarf python.

The conservancy is surrounded by the walls of a collapsed volcano within which a hard granite core is rich with gemstones created by slow cooling molten rock.
