Fantastic mountain scenery, pony treks and walking country

Lesotho

Semonkong

The journey to Semonkong takes the traveller through some of Lesotho's finest scenery. Traditional stone villages strung between high volcanic peaks and extravagantly eroded sandstone rocks. The road reaches an extraordinary 3000 metres before decending to the town of Semonkong Smoking Water.

Pony trekking is a major attraction in an area far better suited to hooves than wheels. Ketane Falls are an unpsoilt 120-metre drop reached in a day by pony with many fine views. The scenic half-day walking trip to Maletsunyane Falls sees an impressive 200 metres drop past sheer cliff into a pool that welcomes bathers when not frozen.

The spiral aloe, national flower of Lesotho, is found in abundance around the area which suits its need for steep volcanic slopes.

During the winter, local racehorses provide the main sport with monthly meetings.
