Lake Kivu port, busy market city, old Belgian colonial villas
Bukavu was established in 1901 as Costermansstad by the Belgian colonial authorities. It had been chosen as a privileged residential area for the predominantly European population, attracted by the subtropical climate and scenic location.
Bukavu is built on five peninsulas to be described as a green hand, dipped in the lake. Prime locations saw colonial villas with gardens sloping down to the shore. The main residential districts for the less priviliged climbs up the hillside inland.
The city of 250,000 today is a busy market centre for the surrounding area which brings the local population up to half a million.
The area was the ancient territory of the Bushi Kingdom. The name Bukavu comes from the word bu 'nkafu, meaning 'farm of cows' in Mashi, the language of Bushi.
