D R Congo Guide

A rare view of deeper Africa, lowland gorillas, lava flows and Belgian beers

East Africa

D R Congo

Lake Kivu dominates the eastern border with Rwanda, which provides a feasible route into the Democratic Republic of Congo, away from the large lawless areas where warlords thrive on mineral riches. Up-to-date local conditions must be assessed before entering the area.

Bukavu to the south of Lake Kivu is busy with police and peacekeepers but provides a rare view of life in a less affluent African city. Lowland Gorillas may be tracked in the adjacent Kahuzi-Biega national park.

The ferry from Bukavu across the lake to Goma provides a first view of Nyiragongo Volcano with long, dark lava tracks leading into the city itself. 2002 saw the last eruption, destroying much of the city as lava flowed to the lake.

One welcome legacy of harsh Belgian colonial rule is found in the culinary influence, excellent crepe suzettes and Belgian beers.
