Endangered lowland gorillas, Dian Fossey, extinct volcanoes
Kahuzi Biega national park is a World Heritage Site for its place as one of the last refuges of the rare eastern lowland gorilla. It was the original site where Dian Fossey studied gorillas before relocating to Rwanda.
The park has not escaped ongoing fighting and the presence of rebel genocidaire forces that has seen looting, burning and poaching. It is reckoned that the estimated population of 300 in the 1990s may have been reduced to under 150.
Outside the park, there is a chimpanzee sanctuary.
The park takes its name from two extinct volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega.
