West Africa

Benin

Lesser known Benin is now promoting itself as a tourist-firndly destination with great, varied scenery and a fascinating history, along with tropical beaches.

The fine palace at Abomey dates back to the Dan-Homey empire - one of Africa's great kingdoms over 300 years, finally falling to the French in 1892.

Ouidah boasts the twin 'attractions' of Slavery and birthplace of Voodoo. Visitors can follow the Route of Slaves to re-enact the dark farewell of the trade which lasted here until 1885. Grand Popo and Porto Novo were similarly active.

To the north, Pendjari offers great scenery in one of West Africa's best parks - rich birdlife, cheetah, leopards and elephant and much more. The "W" du Niger features herds of buffalo and elephant, along with hippos and rarely seen Big Cats. It was named for the double bend in the great river.
