Rugged wilderness, walking safaris, rich but elusive game and good birdlife

Malawi public reserve

Nkhotakota

Nkhotakota wildlife reserve is a rugged wilderness area stretching down the Rift Valley escarpment with a handful of fishing rivers on course for the lake through streams and waterfalls.

The attraction lies in unspoilt woodlands, rainforest and thick grassland best explored on foot when game sightings all the more rewarding for having been earned. Chipata Mountain at 1638 metres rewards the climb with views to Lake Malawi.

Lack of roads and density of vegetation rule out classic game viewing but make excellent terrain for walking safaris among woodland, tall grasses and patches of rainforest.

The range of mammals match anywhere in Malawi - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, sable and eland. Birdlife is prolific with giant kingfishers and palm nut vultures among the 130 recorded species.
