Bush wilderness, safari walks, game tracking, wild orchids, fishing

Malawi public reserve

Kasungu

Kasungu national park offers the exploration of unspoilt wilderness. It is primarily a wild area of woodland and bush divided by a river network that runs east into Lake Malawi.

Thick cover manages to hide even large herds of buffalo, along with lion, elephant, zebra, oribi and puku, Sightings are very much a matter of chance and expert local knowledge.

Game is best seen with limited water from August until the rains come again in November. Even then best chances lie in the adventure of tracking with a guide. The start of the year sees the peak of the rains and generally difficult access.

Birdlife numbers around 350 species but easily hidden in heavy vegetation. Orchids and birds are best at the onset of the rains in November and December. Black stork and wattled crane among the larger species seen around the lake. Fishing, cave paintings and tsetse fly are also present.
