Lesotho Highlands Water Project, vast reservoir, massive dam, fine scenery en route

Lesotho

Katse

Katse reservoir and its huge dam stand at the centre of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project which provides hydro-electricity and income from the agreement to supply water to South Africa.

The route passes through awesome scenery on the way to Katse. the town itself much less remarkable than the sheer dimensions of the dam. The area does have impressive birdlife.

Water is supplied to Johannesburg through a system of very long tunnels and channels which route the new supply through to the Vaal River. The system has tried to minimise environmental impact by supplying local rivers as required.

A side effect of the development has been to upgrade of many of Lesotho's road. In times of drought, it is also able to supply Maseru through the Mohokare River.
