King Moshoeshoe's original mountain-top base, farming market town, gateway to Northern Highlands
Rich lowland farming country around Butha Buthe was first inhabited by King Moshoeshoe I in the 1820s. His mountain-top base provided sanctuary for many dispossessed by Zulu King Shaka's conquering army.
Proving vulnerable to attack, Butha Buthe was given up a few years later for the better appointed stronghold at Thaba Bosiu where he remained.
Butha Buthe has easy road access to the Northern Highlands from South Africa's Clarens and Golden Gate national park.
The town dates back to 1884 when a British tax centre was created and quickly became a trading centre. Today's busy market town is a short drive from both the stunning Moteng Pass and Tsehlanyane national park.
