Shiny, bustling modern capital, rhino tracking, Livingstone's mission, golfing
Gaborone is Botswana's busy modern capital - a thriving, shiny, modern centre reflecting the diamond riches of the country. Administrative functions are matched by excellent hotels and restaurants and modern shopping centres. The area is the setting for the fictional No 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
The city was built from the ground up as 1966 independence approached and the existing colonial administrative centre was in Mafeking in South Africa. It was selected from a number of sites for its railway and good links with South Africa.
The city is named after Chief Gaborone who settled in nearby Tlokweng in 1880s. The colonial Pioneer Column is remembered in the ruins of Village Fort, dating back to 1890. Mokolodi nature reserve is interesting for its cheetah enclosure, rhino tracking and elephant walks.
To the west on the river, Kolobeng is the site of David Livingstone's Mission where his house still remains along with the grave of his daughter Elizabeth.
