Garden Route

Mountain Passes

The passes of the Garden Route include extraordinary feats of engineering that show off magnificent scenery. Prince Alfred's Pass (1856-1867) reveals fine wild scenery thanks to road builder Andrew Geddes Bain, his son Thomas and a crew of 270 convicts. The road builders of the time endured much frustration as they attempted to break through the mountains. The frequently captive, convict labour usually paid a much higher price as the roads were laid down - blood sweat, pain and often death.
