Elephant Coast

Giant Turtles

Giant turtles are long term visitors - travelling up to 3,500 km to breed on the Maputaland coast to the north of KwaZulu-Natal. In December and January, loggerhead and giant leatherback turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The leatherback is the largest living turtle - up to 3 metres and 900 kilograms - hardly changed over 100 million years. Named by their large heads, loggerheads are somewhat smaller at 100+ kilos - with powerful jaws to crush mollusks, crabs and others.
