Heading out of Cape Town, beyond the Cape Winelands, a number of routes show off the rugged coast and impressive mountains

South Africa

Western Cape

Along the south coast, Hermanus is best known for the seasonal visit of whales into Walker Bay where they can be viewed just offshore. The route can be extended to the southern tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas and onto the Garden Route.

The alternative Mountain Route heads along Breede River Valley through some stunning rock formations, through further wine country and into the arid ostrich-laden Little Karoo before reaching the Garden Route at George.

Less travelled is the West Coast route from Cape Town - well known for carpets of wild flowers from August on. More fine scenery leads to the lovely fishing village at Paternoster and fine hiking country in the Cederberg range.

Lamberts Bay offers the Bird Island breeding colony of some 30,000 gannets and excellent crayfish in season from November to April.
