The riches of the city were built on the discovery of rich gold resources - clearly evident from the sandy hills of waste seen from the highway. Gauteng means 'place of gold' and it remains the economic centre of the country - but not the capital. As with any major city, it is as well to be wary - and it is certainly not to be explored blindly - but Johannesburg does not have to be 'avoided at all costs'. It has some excellent hotels and some of the best restaurants in the country.
