Wildlife oasis, fine mountain scenery, convenient stopover
Karoo national park provides a wildlife oasis in the middle of the Great Karoo, a convenient stopover for the travellers rewarded by a comfortable rest camp. Klipspringer Mountain pass is an impressive feat of civil engineering with spectacular views.
Fine scenery of Nuweveld Mountains is populated with zebra, eland, red hartebeest, springbok and black wildebeest with a good range of smaller mammals. Reptiles include five species of tortoise, lizard, gecko, chameleon and several snakes.
Cape mountain zebra, buffalo and black rhino are among indigenous species have been relocated to their previous ranges where earlier grassy landscapes saw large herds of antelope and other plains game.
Shrubland vegetation supports rich birdlife with larks and chats across the plains and larger species Karoo korhaan and Ludwig's bustard. Raptor's include black eagle, booted eagle and rock kestrel.
