Kilimanjaro is both Africa's highest mountain and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. It rises some 5km from base to peak. The scenic image, no requirement for specialised skills or equipment and high success rates feed a constant flow of new climbers each day.
Recommended climbing routes - paying due attention to the risk of altitude sickness - take from 5 days. Most popular is the route from Marangu with more and less well-equipped options and varying group sizes.
The view from below requires a bit more luck as cloud frequently shrouds the whole mountain. The glaciers of the peak are more likely seen from passing flights.
