Barberton Mountains
An early gold rush led to South Africa's first Stock Exchange in Barberton - long since gone with the exhausted gold. What remains is some of South Africa's most dramatic, unspoilt mountain scenery and some excellent opportunities for walking and riding.The Mokhonjwa Mountains include some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet -3.5 billion year old volcanic rocks. The first form of life on earth, a bacterial microfossil "Archaeospheroides Barbertonis" was discovered here - aged at 3.2 billion years.
