Mombasa is the gateway to beach holidays on the Indian Ocean with a number of large resort hotels along the immediate north coast and across the ferry at Diani Beach.
The archetypal narrow Swahili streets of the Mombasa Old Town date back to the 13th Century.
Mombasa later developed as the base of the nascent British Colony at the start of the 19th Century, connecting incoming ships with interests inland. The theme was developed with the construction of the Lunatic Express railway in the 1890s to provide a route to Uganda.
