Herds of impressive elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro

Kenya public reserve with 392 km2

Amboseli

The big attraction is the backdrop - the splendid sight of Africa's highest mountain rising just over the Tanzanian border. Early morning offers the best chance of a cloud-free view.

The picturesque park is best known for its large herds of elephant, buffalo and rich birdlife. Over 400 species of bird have been recorded across five distinct habitats.

The habituated elephant population numbers around 1000, boasting some of the biggest in Africa. Visits mauy be arranged in advance to the Cynthia Moss Elephant Research Centre.

Kilimajaro's ice cap feeds the springs under the park's swamps. A seasonal lake covers much of the park, with dust-devil mini-whirlwinds in the dry season.

Amboseli was used as the location for the film King Solomon's Mines.
