Nairobi grew with the arrival of the railway from Mombasa to Uganda. A handful of shacks around the railhead of 1899 has become the hub of East Africa, supporting regional press corps, multi-national and United Nations headquarters.
Broad avenues and shiny high-rise of the city centre are surrounded by pleasant residential suburbs. Accommodation is best decided by travel requirements.
The old colonial residential suburb at Karen is well placed for a stopover avoiding the massively overburdened traffic system. The area is named after Out of Africa's Karen Blixen who lived here.
Nairobi is the entry point for most safaris and offers a good selection of excursions. Golfers will enjoy the well-maintained courses around the city.
