Dramatic views over spectacular scenery are punctuated by eight freshwater and soda lakes as the Great Rift Valley follows its course from Red Sea through to the coast of Mozambique.
Rich soils produce good farming country, while its preservative properties have created a rich source of fossils. Escarpment walls provide a mountainous backdrop.
Large flocks of greater and lesser flamingo feed on the crustaceans that thrive on the high levels of algae in the shallow soda lakes. High levels of sodium carbonate result in high alkalinity and shores whitened by crystallised salt.
