Stark and scenic, a favourite of Joy Adamson with elephant, hyena and leopard
Shaba national reserve was one of Joy Adamson's favourite reserves, where she died while still working on the release of hand-reared leopards. An arid landscape is dotted with lush springs and rocky river gorges.
The stark and beautiful scenery of Shaba is stood over by volcanic Mount Shaba on the southern border. The steep sided ravines are a favourite haunt for leopard.
The northern boundary is marked by distinctive tall doum palms of the Ewaso Ngiro river flowing on to nearby Chanler's Falls and Lorian Swamp.
Shaba is home to many elephant and hyena, some lion and dry country species - grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk. The forest areas have abundant birdlife.
