Rugged scenery, mountain views, big cats and dry country game viewing

Central Kenya public reserve

Samburu

Samburu national reserve draws wildlife to the Uaso Nyiro river which flows on to Lorian Swamp. The reserve is notable for the presence of several dry country species.

Varied acacia, riverine forest, thorn trees and grassland vegetation is complemented by rugged scenery, volcanic plains, rocky outcrops and views of mountain peaks, Koitogor and Ololokwe.

Big cats lion, cheetah and leopard, elephants, buffalo, hippos and big crocodiles are all present, along with gerenuk, Grant's gazelle, Kirk's dik-dik, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe among the local attractions.

The local Samburu people are Maa speakers, as the Maasai. They are traditionally pastoralists keeping mainly cattle but also sheep, goats and camels.
