Volcanic island, huge crocodiles, humanoid fossils around the world's bggest desert lake

Kenya

Lake Turkana

Rift Valley Lake Turkana stretches over 250 kilometres south from the Ethiopia border into the arid desert of northern Kenya. It is the world's largest desert lake and an important breeding ground for massive nile crocodiles.

Turkana is a World Heritage Site boasting three national parks with fossils at Sibiloi, volcanic South Island and still active Central Island.

Koobi Fora in Sibilou national park has unearthed important humanoid fossils - now on display in Nairobi. Mammalian, molluscan and other fossil remains are dsiplayed locally. In the 1970s it became known as the Cradle of Mankind for the discoveries.

Important wildlife is centered around the crocodiles, hippos, venomous snakes and rich birdlife. Anglers are drawn to the lake for tigerfish, catfish and pufferfish along with enormous Nile perch.
