Nile perch fishing, ancient rock art, fossiled apes and lakeside lodges

Kenya

Lake Victoria Kenya

Lake Victoria was at the heart of much 19th Century exploration as Burton and Speke sought the source of the Nile. Africa's largest body of water stands behind only Lake Superior in area as a freshwater lake.

Kenya's part of the shoreline is small but with a number of attractions that include fishing for Nile perch, abundant birdlife and the Luo culture. Ruma national park is notable for the presence of oribi and roan antelope, large leopard and its rich birdlife.

Much of the local geography originates from an ancient Rift Valley volcano. Originally 75 miles in diameter, erosion has reduced the mass to core magma of the Kisingiri Hills on the mainland and the surrounding remnants of the cone in the semicircular Rangwa mountain range and the islands of Rusinga and Mfangano.
