Okavango Delta gateway, overnight stopover, safari service town, busy airport

Okavango Delta town

Maun

Maun is the jumping off point for the Okavango Delta and hub of Botswana tourism, hosting numerous local safari and transport operators. Tarring of the road in 1990s and opening of the airport in 1996 saw rapid development of the town as a tourism service centre.

Donkeys are commonly seen foraging around the streets of Maun, tribal capital of the Batawana since 1915. It is notable for the bright patchwork costumes of Herero women.

The busy airport sees a regular services out to the lodge airstrips scattered around the delta. 4x4 hire and a wide range of overnight accommodation are available.

Longest established among the hotels and lodges, Riley's has been serving travellers from its Thamalakane River location since the 1920s when it was established for the hunting community.
