Relaxed capital city, mountain location, Swazi market
Mbabane stands on the Mbabane River in a hollow of the Dlangeni Hills which surround all sides with granite peaks and valleys.
The city grew rapidly to the end of the 20th century but only then passed 100,000, reflecting the scale of Swaziland itself. It became capital in 1902 when adminstration was moved from today's Manzini which retains much of the country's industry.
The bustling city centre provides a relaxed opportunity to have a look at urban African life, away from the uncertainty of its larger counterparts. The centre of town is Allister Miller Street with a number of colonial buildings and the busy Swazi Market, offering a good selection of souvenirs.
To the south of the city, Tea Road provides a pleasant excursion into the mountains.
