Excellent black rhino viewing, white rhino, elephant, buffalo, tsessebe antelope, eagle
Mkhaya game reserve is one of the best places to see black rhino. Game viewing in the compact area of acacia savanna includes white rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard and the less common tsessebe antelope. In 1986, the elephant became the first in the country for fifty years.
Conservation started to save the pure stock of indigenous Nguni cattle. The reserve is now used as a protected breeding area where threatened species are nurtured for Hlane national park. The colourful purple-crested lourie and Narina trogon are present, with bateleur eagle among the raptors.
Traditional stone and thatch cottage and tented accommodation are available at Stone Camp whoch can also offer guided walking safaris.
The Great Usutu River flows through Mkhya along Bulungu Gorge, a popular section for whitewater rafting.
