Mount Mulanje
Mulanje Mountain is the highest in Central Africa and all the more impressive for its sheer bulk, rising starkly above the plains. Sapitwa is the highest of multiple scalable peaks, with a height of 3002 metres.
The mass of igneous rock has weathered into a wealth of pronounced, rugged features. Fort Lister Gap follows a broad rift jointly created by the Sombani River and the Phalombe River. Its untarred road provides some of the best views for those who not venturing on foot.
Serious hikers and proficient climbers are rewarded by breathtaking scenery, clear mountain streams, huge rocky outcrops and montane forest. Overnight mountain huts allow hikes of several days. Best months are from September up to December, avoiding the coldest months and impossible rainy season.
Thick rainforest, Mulanje cedar up to 30 metres, a myriad of flowers, prolific butterflies, venus fly-trap, black eagle, blue monkey, klipspringer and even forest cobra make up rich wildlife of the mountain.
