Barefoot luxury, snorkel and scuba, baobabs, island walk and a huge cathedral

Lake Malawi island

Likoma Island

Likoma Island is surrounded by clear waters, a wealth of colourful fish and sandy beaches. Barefoot luxury and water sports are contrasted by strong missionary history dating back to David Livingstone. Dry, gently rolling landscapes offer a scenic walk past mango and impressive baobab trees to the busy local port.

Quite extraordinarily, the missionaries built a cathedral of local bricks and termite mound mortar to dimensions similar to Winchester Cathedral. This vast building was started in 1903 and completed with stained glass and carved soapstone.

Smaller Chizumulu Island can be explored along its coastal path in a day trip by boat from Likoma. Its main features are the two hills, forested to the top with some cassava on the lower slopes. Baobab trees again punctuate the landscape.

Both Likoma and Chizumulu sit in Mozambique waters, close to its mainland. They became part of Malawi because of the enduring historical links brought by the missionaries. Boats are available to visit Mozambique's Cobue for a day trip or an extended stopover at Nkwichi wilderness.
