Rolling grasslands, plentiful orchids and wildflowers, rich birdlife, riding and hiking

Malawi public reserve

Nyika Plateau

Remote and unpopulated, Nyika Plateau is Malawi's largest national park, spreading from Zambia's Luangwa Valley across rolling grasslands to the Rift Valley escarpment and Lake Malawi. The granite plateau sits at altitudes over 2000 metres, reaching a gentle peak of 2605 at Nganda Peak.

Over two hundred species of orchid, some endemic, are best seen in the wet season from January to March. Carpets of grassland wildflowers are best around September and October.

Eland and roan are among the larger antelope species, sharing the landscape with zebra and occasional elephant and buffalo. The main predators are spotted hyena and a high density of leopard.

Wattled crane and bustard are among the largest of 400 bird species, with colourful woodland birds best seen early in the day.
