Malawi Guide
Lake of Stars, beach getaways, impressive mountains and rich wildlife
Lake Malawi dominates the country as it follows the Rift Valley through Central Africa. The Lake of Stars offers sandy beaches, bathing, kayak adventure, lodges, resorts and watersports to contrast with Malawi's wildlife.
The depth of the lake contrasts with the striking peaks of Mount Mulanje, on the southern border with Mozambique. In its shadows, tea plantations offer a colonial experience while the Zomba Plateau provides another mountain destination rich in wildlife.
Approaching the lake, Liwonde National Park has good game viewing on land and river, with hippo, crocodiles and elephants as they come to drink. To the north, Nyika Plateau is a highland wilderness with fine vistas, inhabited by roaming antelope and rich birdlife.
Malawi offers varied experiences over its small area, drawing the visitor into daily life. It further offers best access to the Mozambiquan lodges on the lake through baobab-rich Likoma Island – once visited by Livingstone and boasting an incongruously large cathedral.
