Spectacular mountain scenery looks out to the lowveld of the Kruger Park and beyond into Mozambique

South Africa

Mpumalanga

Most interest in Mpumalanga lies in the area adjacent to the Kruger Park as the Lowveld meets the magnificent Drakensberg Escarpment.

The Panorama Route takes you through the highlights of the mountains, known also for its trout fishing. The largely wooded lands under the mountains provide some lovely scenery and number of well-regarded golf courses.

To the south, the ancient Barberton mountains rise on the approach to the Swazi kingdom - easily reached and worth a visit. The rocks here are some of the earth's earliest geological formations.

Wakkerstroom is notable as a birding hotspot.
