Bazaruto Archipelago

Bazaruto Archipelago runs north of Vilanculos across a chain of five islands, rich in fish and coral. Lowtide sees a network of sand channels off the mainland, soon to transform into a hypnotic pattern of yellows and blues.

The area boasts 2,000 fish species, with abundant game fish and a wealth of tropical fish around coral gardens. Dolphins and whales are resident, with excellent shark diving and, from December to February, whale shark. The legendary endangered mermaid dugong feeds on sea-grass found in sheltered bays.

Deep sea fishing, surfcasting and saltwater flyfishing are complemented by a full range of water sports - scuba diving, snorkel, water ski, sailing, windsurfing and swimming in warm waters. Traditional dhows are used for local taxis and cargo as well as leisure cruises.

Wildlife includes bushbuck, red duiker, samango monkey, elephant shrew, freshwater crocodiles and 150 species of birds, with flocks of flamingo and rare crab plover. Leatherback and loggerhead turtle breed on the beaches of Benguerra and Bazaruto.
