Old trading settlement, colonial quarter, busy dhow harbour, pleasant excursion
Inhambane is principally of interest for diving, fishing and beaches of nearby Barra Peninsula and Tofo. The town offers a good view of traditional coastal life.
Trading originated from the waters of Inhambane with a Swahili outpost dating back a thousand years. Working dhows remain busy in the harbour formed between two headlands - ferries to mainland Maxixe and fishing rich local stocks. The annual dhow race takes place between Inhambane and Maxixe.
Portuguese settlement in 1534 was followed by the first Jesuit missionaries to East Africa. Growing trade in ivory and cloth led in 18th century to the establishment of one of the main slave centres, declining with the end of slavery and the growth of Maputo.
The pleasant town features spacious tree-lined avenues and a number of colonial buildings from its 19th century heyday. The Cathedral of our Lady of Conception in the old quarter offers views of the town and harbour. Mercado Central is a colourful mix of local produce, fish, cashews and spices.
