Popular tourist destination, sandy beaches, old colonial architecture, diving and fishing
Pemba is a popular destination for regional tourists attracted to its good beaches, coral reef and rich marine life. It is the main gateway to Quirimbas Archipelago and within easy reach of Ilha de Mocambique.
Pemba Bay is a large natural harbour formed by Londo Peninsula reaching down from the north and the peninsula on which Pemba sits. The small sea channel creates one of the biggest enclosed bays in the world. It is thought to have been used by German u-boats in World War I.
Beaches are wide and sandy, lined with palm trees, bars and restaurants. Wimbe Beach is sheltered by a coral reef to offer snorkelling and calm swimming waters. Diving sites include London Gardens, Caves and Pete's Canyons with beautifully varied coral formations and abundant sealife.
Originally Porto Amelia, the colonial town was founded by Niassa Company in 1904 and retains lovely Portuguese architecture around the main harbour. Next to the old town is the original settlement with neat thatch houses and dhow harbour. Intricate traditional silverware is a feature of the local market.
