Barefoot luxury island getaways, diving and sport fishing, old trading history
Quirimbas Archipelago is a string of 30 coral island and islets running along the northern coast of Mozambique. The area is protected as a national park and World Heritage Site for its rich marine life.
Deep seafishing and dive sites are rated as top class as the continental shelf drops off sharply close by. Coral reefs provide excellent snorkelling with clear waters and abundant colourful tropical fish.
Vamizi, Quisiva, Matemo and Medjumbe provide remote barefoot luxury island getaways with excellent diving among coral reefs and rich sport fishing.
Ibo Island has been prominent in coastal trading history as Portuguese forces displaced Moslem traders from the strategic location. Control of the gold and ivory trade was boosted by fine maluane cloth from Amisa, the largest island, and prized cowry shells from Quirimba. The islands were used by the Portuguese to supply food to its capital at Ilha de Mocambique.
