Red-tinged sand dunes, desert wildlife, San bushmen
The Kalahari is the biggest continuous area of sand in the world, commonly associated with red-tinged dunes, the home of surviving San bushmen and mystical attraction of space, solitude and silence.
Its rainfall supports a good level of vegetation with acacias prominent amongst widespread shrubs. Summer rains bring rich green covering of grass and the magical blossoming of wild flowers. Technically, this means that Kalahari Desert is a misnomer but it certainly meets most expectations of desert.
Bushman culture and survival skills provide a very different hunter-gatherer perspective in a harsh environment. San dialects are rich with phonetic clicks that are provide more than a challenge for visitors.
