Fishing port, Kolmanskop ghost town, colonial art nouveau architecture, crayfish

Namibia town

Luderitz

Fishing port Luderitz started as a late 19th century German trading post. It reached its peak with the 1909 discovery of diamonds, marked by abandoned Kolmanskop ghost settlement just outside town.

Luderitz retains much interesting colonial architecture with diamond palaces on hillsides around the harbour. The restored art nouveau Goerke Haus is re-furnished with period pieces and open to the public.

Nearby Dias Cross marks a landing point of the great explorer Bartholomeu Diaz on his voyage of 1487-1488. Surrounding inlets and rocky bays have their own microclimate - often covered in mist while Luderitz is bathed in sun.

Local wildlife includes penguin, flamingo and seal. Abundant local crayfish are excellent.
